Civil service is the group of government officials who are employed in occupations that serve the citizens.
The term “serve the citizens” is broad.
A Police Officer serves the citizens by maintaining law and order.
A Revenue Officer makes sure that the Government coffers have enough finances to run welfare schemes for the poor.
An Administration Officer deals with the day-to-day running of the Government.
To become an IAS Officer, a candidate must secure a high rank in the UPSC Civil Service Examination. This is because IAS is the most sought-after Service among the Civil Services.
Other Civil Services include Indian Foreign Service, Indian Railway Personnel Service, Indian Audit & Accounts Service, Indian Trade Service, Indian Postal Service, Indian Information Service, etc.
Hence IAS or Indian Administration Service is just one of the Civil Services that exist in our nation.
